The NCH Volunteer Auxiliaries, representing the Downtown Naples Hospital, North Naples Hospital, and the Marco Island Healthcare Center and honorary Chairman, former Miami Dolphin Quarterback, Earl Morrall, are pleased to announce the launch of their first ever joint fundraising campaign, Miles of Quarters, to benefit the Community Blood Center.  The community-wide fundraising project is being rolled out this month, and it is slated to run through April 30. The project also features a main event, the Cycle for Life Charity Fun Ride to be held on Sun. March 13 in Naples at North Collier Regional Park.  All proceeds collected will be used to purchase new equipment to streamline the blood donation process and increase Community Blood Center’s blood collections by 8%. The Community Blood Center will then be able to help an additional 4,000 local patients such as critically ill newborn babies, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, patients requiring cardiac surgery, accident victims, or individuals with a wide range of medical illnesses.

According to NCH volunteer spokesperson Pat Campagne “The three NCH Volunteer Auxiliaries elected to unite in a community wide project to benefit more people throughout our community. We chose the Community Blood Center as the recipient of the Miles of Quarters project because it provides the vital service of supplying all of the blood and blood products used throughout Collier County.  Every 25 minutes someone in Collier County uses a blood or blood product. Our goal is to raise as many miles of quarters as possible, so that more lives can be saved.” She adds, “Please support our effort to pass life on by turning over your quarters.”

The Community outreach project, Miles of Quarters, is being rolled out this week when the NCH volunteer auxiliary members will be out in the community distributing nearly 10,000 empty Miles of Quarters prescription vials compliments of KMart Pharmacy, Golden Gate Parkway.  Individuals, service groups, organizations and businesses will be asked to fill the vials with paper currency or with $10 in quarters. Contributors can take their filled vials and deposit them into special Miles of Quarters receptacles found in the lobbies of the NCH Downtown Hospital: 350 7th St. N., North Naples Hospital: 11190 Health Park Blvd. & Marco Island Healthcare Center: 40 Heathwood Drive.

Additional vials can be obtained in the volunteer offices at the locations listed above. The NCH volunteer auxiliary members estimate that one mile is approximately 63,360 lined quarters, amounting to $15,840. Their goal is to raise as many miles as possible through the distribution of vials. Contributions large or small can also be made by sending a check made payable to NCH Volunteer Auxiliary to: NCH Volunteer Auxiliary PO Box 413029 Naples, FL 34101.  Please mark MOQ/CFL in the memo line.

The NCH Volunteer Auxiliary Miles of Quarters feature event, the NCH Cycle for Life Charity Fun Ride, will be held on Sun. March 13 and offers 10, 30 and 62 mile courses, designed for ages 14 and up. The event starts out at North Collier Regional Park 15000 Livingston Road, Naples 34109. The first set of riders departs at 7:30 am. Title Sponsor, Bank of America and Presenting Sponsors Arthrex, Costco, NCH Wellness Centers are joined by Community Sponsors: USA Cycling Naples Pathways Coalition, Naples Velo, Florida Cycling Magazine, Foot Solutions, DZ Nuts, Clif Bar, Start Smart Cycling, The Bike Route and Planet Smoothie.  Riders can pre-register for the event by visiting www.givebloodcbc.org and click on the registration links. The website also features a downloadable flyer and event registration form that can be turned in day of event at the registration table starting at 6:45 am.  Pre-registration rates are as follows: Adults: $20, Family: (3, 4, or 5 members) $45. Day of event registration fees: Adults $25, Family (3, 4, or 5 members) $50. The first 250 riders will receive a premiere sport bag filled with goodies. Since 1970, January has been recognized as National Blood Donor Month (NVBDM).  The Community Blood Center has joined with AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) to stress the importance of donating blood and get donors mobilized to help boost local supplies.  The need for blood is constant, and volunteer blood donors contribute to nearly all the blood used for patient care in the United States.  Every person depends on blood.  Each day, patients across the country receive approximately 39,000 units of this lifesaving resource. Every 25 minutes someone in a Collier County hospital receives blood.  This year alone, as many as five million patients will require blood transfusions, as accident victims, people undergoing surgery, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer and other diseases. Immediately following the terrorist attacks, Collier County, like most other regions of the nation, experienced an outpouring of charitable spirit by the many blood donors who came to give a their gifts of life. The Community Blood Center hopes to see that same spirit of giving continue. Donating blood this September 11 is one way people can help to save lives as well as memorialize the lives of people impacted by the terrorist attacks in 2001.   Every 2 seconds someone in America needs blood so the Community Blood Center encourages everyone to pay it forward, give blood and save 3 lives with a single pint. People can donate blood every 56 days. Anyone who weighs at least 110 pounds can give blood. Donors must be age 17 (16 year old donors can give blood with parent present). There is no upper age maximum to give blood. All donors must supply photo ID at time of donation.  Donating blood is easy and safe. Donors must eat prior to giving blood and should be well hydrated.
