JOIN ME WON’T YOU? September 10, 2010

Sunday, September 19th  from noon – 2pm, I will be at the Publix at Fiddlesticks for the FILL OUR FLEET FEED OUR HUNGRY event. Look for the LeeTran bus at Publix and help fill our fleet with non-perishable food and pet food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

PLEASE HELP September 9, 2010

LeeTran is marshalling its forces to collect 50 tons of food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida on Sunday, Sept. 19.

For the second year, LeeTran is challenging Southwest Florida to help the 30,000 people who seek assistance from the food bank each week.

On Sunday, Sept. 19, a LeeTran vehicle and volunteers will be at every Publix supermarket in Lee County from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. They will gratefully accept donations of non-perishable food items or cash to feed the “new hungry” of Southwest Florida: the working poor, seniors on fixed incomes, and the unemployed who have to choose between feeding their families and paying other bills.

Last year’s food drive collected 25 tons of food; this year, the goal has been bumped to 50 tons, because the food bank’s shelves are depleted after a summer of hunger.

Donation bags may be purchased in advance at any Publix, but we urge Southwest Florida to visit us on Sunday, Sept. 19 to donate just one can of food, and show the community that we care.

ORCHESTRAS FEEDING AMERICA March 4, 2010

On March 12 & 13 the Southwest Florida Symphony will participate in Orchestras Feeding America, a national food drive by members of the League of American Orchestras in partnership with Feeding America. This is the second consecutive year that America’s orchestras have mobilized their musicians, staff, volunteers and audiences to help alleviate hunger in communities across the country. Non-perishable food will be collected at concerts on March 12 & 13 in the lobby of the Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall prior to the Star Spangled Pops Concert.

To date, 245 orchestras are participating in Orchestras Feeding America and the number of participants is growing daily. Most orchestras will conduct their food drives during the month of March, but dates may vary locally. The project is organized by the League of American Orchestras, which represents the nation’s professional, volunteer, and youth orchestras, and Feeding America’s network of over 200 food banks and 63,000 agencies. In 2009, 250 orchestras in all 50 states collected more than 200,000 pounds of food. Fran Goldman, Executive Director of the Southwest Florida Symphony said, “Lee County has been severely impacted by the economic downturn. Many of our neighbors and their children now need our help. This food drive is one way our orchestra can give back to the community that has supported us for nearly 50 years.” The Symphony will donate the food to the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Since 1983, the Harry Chapin Food Bank has served as the only Food Bank in Southwest Florida (Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties). On an annual basis the Food Bank provides nutritious, quality food to more than 160 Partner Agencies that provide direct services to those in need. Patrons and community members are invited to drop off food on March 12 & 13 at the Symphony Box Office or at Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall prior to the Star Spangled Pops Concert honoring Maestro Erich Kunzel. For any additional information contact the Symphony office at 239-418-0996. ##

STAR SPANGLED POPS February 26, 2010

Southwest Florida Symphony Performs
Tribute Concert for the Late Erich Kunzel

The Southwest Florida Symphony, along with concert series sponsor the Southwest Florida Symphony Endowment Foundation, present a tribute concert to the late Erich Kunzel entitled “Star Spangled Pops.” The concert will be conducted by the charismatic Joseph Caulkins at the beautiful Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, March 12 and 13, 2010 at 8pm.

In addition to the tribute to Maestro Kunzel, the Southwest Florida Symphony will celebrate the service of all military men and women as well as emergency responders by giving buy-one-get-one-free discounts and an acknowledgement from the stage. Please show your ID at the Symphony box office for this special offer.
The “Star Spangled Pops” concert style had become a signature piece of the late Erich Kunzel and the Southwest Florida Symphony will pay tribute to him through testimonials along with the original programming Maestro Kunzel intended to use on this particular concert.

Join Maestro Caulkins and Lee County’s only professional orchestra as they perform with special guest artist, baritone Daniel Narducci. Narducci frequently performed with Kunzel and was catapulted into the spotlight when he joined Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in 2005.

Daniel Narducci is a multi-faceted artist whose talents have been captured through live stage presentations, recordings, documentaries, and television. Since his professional debut with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of Erich Kunzel, Mr. Narducci has appeared with many of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Pops, Naples Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Houston Symphony, and the Detroit Symphony. He has appeared regularly as a guest artist at many popular summer music venues throughout North America, including the Wolf Trap, Ravinia, Blossom, Saratoga, and Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festivals.
Mr. Narducci’s television appearances have reached audiences worldwide. His historic performance with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing was filmed for nationwide broadcast in China. Mr. Narducci’s other television appearances include co-starring with Frederica von Stade and the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra in a program broadcast internationally by PBS entitled Pops at the Phil: A Century of Broadway. He also appeared with Judy Kaye in the BBC television documentary Kurt Weill in America: I’m a Stranger Here Myself.

The Southwest Florida Symphony will participate in the League American Orchestras, National Orchestras Feeding America Food Drive, March 12 and 13 and will be collecting food donations at the Star Spangled Pops concert.  Food collected will be donated to the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

“Star Spangled Pops” is the last in the 2009-2010 Pops series. Look for information about our upcoming concerts and 50th anniversary celebration in the upcoming months.
