Lamb of God church is located in Estero. Last year we fed 5,800 people in the 5 county area.  This years event will be held on November 25th.  Area volunteers are encourgaged to help through food preparation, delivery and clean up and then are invited to stay for fellowship and enjoy the holiday meal with their families.

Here are some of the highlights of what we were able to accomplish together in 2009:

436 turkeys were roasted and served

Over 10,000 pounds of side dishes inclduing mashed and sweet potatoes, stuffing, green beans and gravy were prepared and served.

Over 5,800 thanksgiving meals were prepared and delivered to families in Lee, Collier, Charlotte and Hendry counties.

Over 400 volunteers participated and contributed more than 2,000 volunteer hours.

Over 100 groups and individuals contrubuted financially to the effort.

To date, we still need volunteers to help with driving.  We also need volunteers for food preparation (we start preparing foods on Sunday night and work all the way through Thursday.)  We also need help with donations of breads and desserts (pies)

TRICK OR TREAT TIME October 21, 2010

KEEP EYES OPEN FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS

Halloween is a holiday filled with tricks, treats and fun for people of all ages. While it’s important to have a good time, it’s essential to be safe.

If you’re getting behind the wheel, it’s important to keep an eye out for the little ones taking to the streets on foot. Be sure to drive slowly, especially in residential areas. While 20 mph may seem like a snail’s pace to some, drivers have a 15 percent chance of killing a pedestrian while traveling at that speed. That number increases to 45 percent when traveling at 30 mph.

Children may be especially excited and energetic on Halloween, possibly making their moves more unpredictable. In addition, their costumes may impair their vision, making it more difficult for them to see surrounding traffic.

Parents can do their part by accompanying their child, using reflective material on the costumes, sending along a flashlight, having the child make eye contact with drivers, and always looking before crossing the street. Another suggestion is to walk facing traffic when in a neighborhood without sidewalks.

Popular trick-or-treating hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. During this time, be sure to stay alert, watching for children at intersections, and along curbs or roadways without sidewalks. Avoid distractions such as talking on the cell phone, texting, changing CD’s or eating.

LEOMA LOVEGROVE’S PAINTING WINE BOTTLES! March 18, 2010

Most of the time, people store away a bottle of wine because it is a rare vintage that will gain value over time. People who buy wine at Sip ‘n’ Send, 2221 Santa Barbara Blvd., Suite 102, in Cape Coral on April 1, however, will have a different reason to keep the bottle. Leoma Lovegrove is getting a jump on Christmas and will be hand painting wine bottles that day to benefit Holidays for Soldiers. Collect an unusual work of art that will retain its value even after the wine is gone.

The Turkey Talk-Line gets more than 100-thousand how-to questions on preparing turkeys every November and December.  They say a common question year after year is about thawing the big bird.  Butterball recommends a thawing time of 24 hours in the refrigerator for every four pounds of turkey.  A quicker method is placing the turkey breast side down in cold water to thaw, which requires 30 minutes per pound.  Thanksgiving cooks can call the Turkey Talk-Line at 1-800-BUTTERBALL weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time now through December 31st, or go online to www.butterball.com
