IN THE PINK September 28, 2010

“In the Pink”

Lovegrove creates art to benefit National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and partners with “Partners for Breast Cancer Care” of Lee County

Each year in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Leoma Lovegrove surrounds herself with hot pink paint. This year, at her new location in Sanibel  Lovegrove will create a Pink Rock Garden to memorialize those who have succumbed to breast cancer. She will also stock her signature coconut postcards, painted with slogans of encouragement to be mailed to those who are undergoing treatment or slogans (I.e. nuts to cancer) of congratulations for survivors of breast cancer. The coconuts are free to anyone currently undergoing treatment. Otherwise, they sell for ten dollars with proceeds going to the cause.
Other items for sale are  pink wall signs made from recycled materials, and sets of note cards that include artwork contributed by past visitors to the gallery. In addition to all that….she has created miniatures canvases with a number on them and swarorski crystals to represent the number of survival years. A creative way to celebrate the survivor’s success of being cancer free. She has also painted a pink chair with the lyrics “Pink” from Aerosmith. The chair has been posted on Lovegrove’s face book and has a price tag of $20,000 . 100% will go to PFBCC because they are so low on funds. Lovegrove is hoping for a celebrity to purchase the chair.

All proceeds benefit PARTNERS FOR BREAST CANCER CARE of Lee Co. They are really hurting for money and a wonderful organization.

DINNER WITH DON SHULA October 29, 2009

FAMED COACH DON SHULA TO HEADLINE LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM FUNDRAISER

LOCAL INDIGENT WOMEN’S CANCER CARE TO BENEFIT

The Lee Memorial Health System Foundation will host an exclusive reception and dinner with legendary coach and mentor Don Shula on Thursday, Nov. 12 at Shula’s Steak House in Naples.

The “Evening with Don Shula” will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and full gourmet dinner with wine pairings.  Naples Mayor Bill Barnett has partnered with the Lee Memorial Health System Foundation on the event and will serve as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies.

Don Shula, an iconic NFL figure, lost his wife to breast cancer and works extensively through his own foundation to raise funds for the cause.  Shula rarely makes personal appearances on behalf of other charities, but was very moved by the care low-income and indigent women are receiving at Lee Memorial Health System’s Regional Cancer Center in Fort Myers.  Coach Shula will greet guests, sign autographs and will speak at the event delivering an “Everyone’s A Coach” motivational speech.  The speech will discuss applying winning sports strategies to the corporate world and our personal lives.  Coach Shula will also take questions from the audience on the state of the NFL today and his history-making 1972 “Perfect Season” with the Miami Dolphins.

Silent and live auctions will include hand-signed memorabilia from some of the greatest heroes in sports including Tiger Woods, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas and Jason Taylor.  Guests will also have the opportunity to bid on a hand-signed guitar from all of the members of The Rolling Stones, original works of art by Darryl Pottorf and the opportunity to attend the 2010 Masters at Augusta and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.

“We are honored to have Coach Shula headline this truly special evening to benefit women who are battling cancer in our community and are in need of care,” said V.P. Oncology and Chief Foundation Officer Sharon MacDonald.  Added, Jeannie Cummings, Director of Development, Lee Memorial Health System Foundation, “Coach Shula is a hero to generations of sports fans, we are truly grateful for his willingness to help raise awareness of the many women who, without our safety-net Health System’s programs, would not have anywhere to go to receive life-saving care. We hope the community will stand with us in our quest to deliver excellence in medical care to all those in need.”

The event is being held on Thursday, Nov. 12 from 6-9 p.m at Shula’s Steak House in Naples.  Tickets are $500 per person.  Sponsors of the event are Mercedes-Benz of Naples, who will showcase a selection of their 2010 models, and Florida Gynecologic Oncology.
