FREE PROSTATE HEALTH SEMINAR September 24, 2010

Lee Memorial Health System Regional Cancer Center to Host

In collaboration with the NFL and the American Urological Association’s Know Your Stats Prostate Cancer campaign, Lee Memorial Health System’s Regional Cancer Center will be hosting a free, informational seminar. This seminar will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Regional Cancer Center, 8931 Colonial Center Drive, Fort Myers, FL 33905. Call 239-335-7595 to register. Reservations are required.

Omar Benitez, M.D., Constantine Mantz, M.D., and Laurie Wise, RN, will present information on prostate cancer prevention, detection and treatment. Attendees also will learn about advances in technology used to treat prostate cancer, such as TrueBeam—a sophisticated radiotherapy technology that accurately and precisely targets tumors, and the Calypso System—a platform designed to track tumors during radiation and ensure precise treatment. A question and answer session will allow attendees to learn more about prostate health.

Tours of the Regional Cancer Center and the TrueBeam device will be available to attendees.

NATIONAL ESTUARIES DAY September 20, 2010

Explore Rookery Bay by boat, kayak and on foot during the free National Estuaries Day celebration on Saturday, September 25th. The Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center offers free admission to the aquariums, nature trail and boat trips on this day to teach people about the Southwest Florida coastal environment. Onsite activities include a touch tank, tours of the science labs, nature films, lectures by fish experts, live music, food vendors, and much more. The Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center in Naples is at 300 Tower Road, near the Prime Outlets, less than 10 miles from downtown Naples. Free admission on Saturday, September 25th. On Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Dunbar High School, 3800 E. Edison Avenue, Fort Myers, you are invited to participate in free health tests and education.

“BACK IN ACTION” September 14, 2010

Lee Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness Offers FREE Class

For Persistent Back Pain – “Back in Action”

Physical Therapy and Exercise Physiology are coming together on Tuesday, Sept. 21 from noon until 1pm at the Lee Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness, 2070 Carrell Road, Fort Myers, to help you manage back pain with simple, beginner exercise techniques you can do at home. The focus will be on posture, breathing and relaxation. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and there is no charge.

The “Back in Action” class instructors will also provide information to participants about a new spine program to debut next month, a pilot program designed in collaboration with physicians to help patients manage their back pain with exercise.

You will experience professional staff and a personal touch at the Lee Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness. The center is endorsed by multiple local physicians and supported by the clinical and support staff of Lee Memorial Health System. Professionally trained exercise physiologists and exercise specialists supervise fitness and wellness services at all times.

Other areas of opportunity at the center include group exercise classes, a cycling studio, cardiovascular and strength training equipment, free weights, personal training, massage services, and convenient hours. A dual membership is available too encouraging the use of The Wellness Center of Cape Coral which also provides a basketball court, aquatics center with 25 yard indoor pool and warm-water therapy pool, swimming lessons for all ages, computerized FitLinxx personal training program, separate steam rooms for men and women, Kids Zone child care, Cafe, and On the Go social club for the 50-plus age group.

The requirements to give blood are:
Age: At least 17 years old (16 with written parental consent) and in good general health. There is no upper age limit.

Weight: Minimum of 115 pounds.
Identification: Must provide photo I.D. with date of birth.
Food: Eat a good meal before giving and drink plenty of fluids.

Medications:  Many medications such as insulin, blood pressure, thyroid, cholesterol, aspirin, antidepressants, and hormone replacement do not necessarily prevent someone from giving blood.

Explore your coastal environment this summer at the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center in Naples. Aquariums, interactive exhibits, a touch tank, nature films and an art gallery are a great way to learn about the Southwest Florida environment while staying cool inside. Naturalists lead two programs daily on topics such as manatees, sea turtles, shells, and coastal birds. Through August 6, Rookery Bay offers Free Fridays for kids 12 and under who are accompanied by paying adults. Each Friday is a new theme for crafts, games, stories and other fun. DIVE INTO OCEANS DAY April 19, 2010

Learn to SCUBA during the sixth annual Dive Into Oceans Day on Saturday, May 1st from 10 to 3 at Rookery Bay, 300 Tower Road in Naples. Admission is free.
