ARMED FORCES DAY

Inaugural Flag Raising for Veterans Memorial

Armed Forces Day, May 15, 2010

Norwich University Naples Alumni Club is pleased to announce they will honor Armed Forces Day and the renovation of the Naples Veterans Memorial on May 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Memorial in Cambier Park, Naples.

Highlighting the celebration will be the initial raising of our Nation’s Colors on a newly installed 45 foot pole. The 12 foot by 18 foot American Flag will be visible for blocks and will highlight the renovations & improvements to the Naples Veterans Memorial.  Built in 1984 to honor WWI through the Vietnam War casualties, seven more names have been added to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.  Twenty-six years of time and weather have caused the need for renovation and improvement to the Memorial.

Brigadier General Joseph Cutrona U.S. Army (Ret.) will be the guest of honor—a veteran of three wars.

The Museum of Military Museum Memorabilia, Collier County Cannon Battery, and the Barron Collier High School Drum Line will also participate.

The Purple Heart Award will be awarded to Staff Sergeant Skipp M. Torres U.S. Army (Ret.) who was wounded in battle August 1950 in Korea.

U.S. Army Captain (Ret.) James Elson, who has served as President of the Collier County Veterans Council 2000-2010 has been intimately involved in the restoration of the Memorial, along with J.R. Hobbs and Kevin Keyes; all are graduates of Norwich University, the oldest private military college in America

Captain Elson said, “It is critically important that the 40 Naples men who died for our country be remembered and properly honored. It is our goal to restore, improve and maintain this Memorial for future generations, and especially for the families of those who have fallen in combat since 9/11.”

Improvements to be added to the original Memorial will be significant: five new flag poles, brick walkways with benches and custom lighting designed especially for War Memorials.

Please tell friends and family to join in the celebration of our local heroes on May 15.

For more information on this community event, contact James Elson at 239.434.2652 or visit   www.colliervets.org.

Freedom Park ∙1515 Golden Gate Parkway, Naples, FL 34105 ∙ Fridays 3-7 p.m.

Buy services and goods with the purpose of helping Collier County children. Market in the Park by Collier County Parks and Recreation is a market with a purpose. Market in the Park has moved from North Collier Regional Park to the county’s newest park – Freedom Park – located near the Coastland Center Mall. Local vendors and park staff host Market in the Park each Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Freedom Park is located at 1515 Golden Gate Parkway by Goodlette-Frank Road.

Vendor fees will continue to benefit children in the Collier County area by contributing to the Growing Connection of Southwest Florida and the Collier County Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund. The Growing Connection is an outreach program that provides children with a hands-on, experiential learning experience while partnering them with schools from other countries. The Growing Connection teaches children about horticulture and health and they get to eat the healthy food they grow! The Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund provides financial support to children and families by paying for program registrations and educational programs.

Stop by, meet the market family and take home some organic and traditional produce, home-baked artisan breads, native plants, home-made salsas and chips, organic candles, soaps, and pet products, wood carvings, Fair Trade items, and more. Many of our vendors not only support this market’s purpose but they are raising funds for children’s health care in Ecuador and helping women and children’s co-ops become self-sufficient in Indonesia and Guatemala.

The Market is open from 3 pm – 7 pm and will be held every Friday (except holidays). For more information please contact Nancy Olson, Sr. Park Naturalist, Exhibit Hall at 239-252-4060 or Cynthia Piper at (239) 438-5682.
