NATIONAL ASK DAY IS JUNE 21, 2010

The employees of the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital and the Child Advocacy Program of The Children’s Hospital are asking for your help to remind SW Florida about gun safety.

Summer is here and the kids will be out of school soon, very likely spending additional time visiting others or at home.  Be aware that it is possible your child will come into contact with a gun at your neighbor’s house, when playing with friends, or under other circumstances outside your home, or in your very own home.

Michele King, Director of the Child Advocacy Program states, “Hiding guns is not enough.  Kids are curious and if they find guns, they are likely to play with them.”

When sending children to play at a friend’s house, parents are encouraged to ask the question – “Is there a gun where my child plays?”

  • If the answer is NO, that’s one less thing to worry about.
  • If the answer is YES, make sure all guns are stored unloaded and locked.

If there are any doubts about the safety of another home, invite the kids to your house instead. Most parents report that they never thought to ask this important question. For more information about the ASK Campaign go to www.AskingSavesKids.org

Give a Pint of Blood and Receive 2 Pints of Queenie’s Ice Cream

Bailey’s General Store, Queenie’s Homemade Ice Cream and the Lee Memorial Blood Centers are teaming up for a bloodmobile drive on Friday, July 2, 2010, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.  The bloodmobile will be parked in the Bailey’s General Store parking lot.

All blood donors will have their blood pressure and pulse, temperature, iron level, cholesterol level and blood type checked at no cost.  Each donor will receive a blood center gift and two pints of Queenie’s Homemade Ice Cream.  You may sign up to donate blood at Bailey’s Service Desk or you may call 472-1516 to place your name on the sign up sheet to donate blood.  Walk-ins are welcome, too.

Donating blood saves lives.  Do you know that your donation of a single pint of blood can help save the lives of several people?  Think about it – your donation of blood will be separated into its different components.  The platelets may go to a child with leukemia; the plasma to a patient with a clotting problem; and the red blood cells to an accident victim.  Blood donations will remain in the Lee Memorial Health System.

Please come out and donate blood Friday, July 2, receive Queenie’s Homemade Ice Cream and help to save a life.   If you have questions about donating blood, call one of Lee Memorial’s blood centers – HealthPark Medical Center, 432-3604; Cape Coral Hospital,  574-5400; Lee Memorial Hospital, 334-5333.

5TH ANNUAL PRENDERGAST LECTURESHIP April 16, 2010

Long-Time Child Advocate Richard B. Akin to be Honored At Event

Lee Memorial Health System Foundation announces that its 5th Annual Prendergast Lectureship is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Lexington Country Club, located at 16257 Willowcrest Way in Fort Myers.

Richard Akin, a long-time child advocate will also receive accolades at the event for his extensive work on behalf of underserved children in our area.  Akin’s award will be presented following a lecture by one of the country’s foremost and sought-after speakers on child abuse, Robin Karr-Morse.  Karr-Morse, an author and therapist, will deliver a speech entitled, “Ghosts From the Nursery: Tracing the Roots of Violence”.  Karr-Morse offers a shocking, but empowering message: to understand violent behavior, we must look earlier – before adolescence, before grade school, before pre-school – to the cradle.

Karr-Morse will present startling evidence that points out that violent behavior is born and cultivated as early as the earliest months of life. It is well-known that the foundations for trust, empathy, conscience and lifelong learning are laid down in infancy. It is also when a predisposition towards violent behavior is “hardwired” into the brain, strongly influenced by environment and neurobiological makeup. Karr-Morse currently continues her work to shift the focus of community systems of social and mental health practices from fixing broken kids to building healthy ones as Executive Director of the Parenting Institute.

The lecture series is supported in part by the Prendergast Family Endowment Fund.  Eileen Prendergast made a $1 million gift to establish the Prendergast Family Endowment Fund for The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida’s Child Advocacy Program. The program features parenting classes taught in partnership with the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida to prevent child abuse.

The lecture is free of charge, but community members are asked to R.S.V.P. to the LMHS Foundation at 239-985-3550.

Memory Classes in Bonita Springs

Do you rely on lists during shopping trips or sticky notes in your car to remind you to pick up Fido from the groomer?

Have you felt a sense of dread after washing your hands, realizing that an important name or number you’d written on them had also washed down the drain?

If so, Lee Memorial Health System’s memory classes may be for you and in May, South Lee County residents can take advantage of classes in their own back yards at the Northern Trust Bank, 26790 S. Tamaimi Trail, Bonita Springs.

A four-session series will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, May 5, 12, 19 & 26.

“Our memory classes are designed to teach participants tools and techniques to retain and remember more information,” says program coordinator Sue Maxwell. “They are part of the system’s Healthy Brain Initiative, which we started to help residents boost brain power and fight the onset of memory disorders. Since we started the classes late last year, hundreds of residents have participated and given us rave reviews. “

Four two-hour sessions are included in the memory class series. The cost is $20 per person, plus $10 for a class workbook. Registration is required and can be made by calling 239-772-6765 or http://www.leememorial.org/healthybrainfl/classes.asp

NATIONAL HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY April 13, 2010

National Healthcare Decisions Day Set for April 16, 2010

Lee Memorial Health System, along with other national, state and community organizations, is leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making—an effort that has culminated in the formal designation of April 16, 2010 as National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD). As a participating organization, Lee Memorial Health System is providing information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and execute written advance directives (healthcare power of attorney and living will) in accordance with Florida state laws. These resources are available free for download from our website at www.leememorial.org/shareclub/livingwill.asp.

Additionally, on April 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lee Memorial Health System is welcoming the public to request free copies of an Advance Directive at the Information Desk in each hospital’s main lobby (Cape Coral Hospital, Gulf Coast Medical Center, HealthPark Medical Center and Lee Memorial Hospital).

“National Healthcare Decisions Day will cause many people in our community to have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and encourage them to complete or update their advance directives to make their personal wishes known,” said Jim Nathan, LMHS President.  “Fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions at times of health crises and all involved will be better able to honor patient wishes when the time comes to make these tough choices.”

Patients create customized bears to help cope during hospital stays

Lee Memorial Health System, in partnership with Florida Golf Coast University HUGS Foundation, announces that its “I’ll Be There” Bear event will take place from Noon – 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers.

Pediatric hematology/oncology patients and their families will create custom teddy bears, donated from the Coconut Point Build-a-Bear store, that include a personalized voice-recorded message. The event includes additional craft projects, food and refreshments and a live DJ providing music.

“The personalized message helps reassure patients and siblings while they’re in the hospital, or anytime they might need comfort,” says Michele King, System Director of Child Life.  “This will be fun; we’re grateful to the University students for thinking of our young patients and to others who are making this possible.”

The oncology program at The Children’s Hospital is certified by The Children’s Oncology Group, acting no behalf of the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute.  The Children’s Hospital also has a Cystic Fibrosis Center and Pediatric Emergency Room, a medical staff of more than 61 specialists and a team of more than 1,000 volunteers.
