Free Autism Screening for Young Children April 25, 2011

The Children’s Hospital of SouthwestFlorida, in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities® ofSouthwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.

The next screening will be held May 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at theSanctuaryOutpatientBuilding,

8960 Colonial Center Drive,Fort Myers

It is estimated that one in every 150 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.

Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.

The ASD screening is conducted by theNeurosciencesCenterat The Children’s Hospital, under the guidance of pediatric neurologist Jose Colon, MD, MPH, and pediatric psychiatrist Marianne Krouk, DO. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.

It is estimated that one in every 150 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.

 

Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.

 Owner Karen Hutto and Chef Lisa Fidler of The Flying Pig in Fort Myers are pleased to host “Chefs for Scholarships,” Thursday, June 10th from 6:00 – 8:30 PM benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida.

“Embracing the Elements” is the theme for this casual evening of sipping champagne cocktails and savoring specially prepared tapas from stations representing Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.  A chef demonstration is planned, tapas will be plentiful and recipes will be available for guests.

Chef Lisa comes to Florida and The Flying Pig via Boston, MA. Graduating from the Bunker Hill Culinary Academy in Boston with a Culinary Arts and Science Degree, Lisa pursued a minor in Pastry Arts. She has several years experience as an Executive Chef, Executive Pastry Chef, and owned a catering/private chef company in the Boston area.  Whether working for celebrities, dignitaries, brides or hosting a backyard BBQ, Chef Lisa’s philosophy is to always use sustainable, local, quality foods and with a creative flair, transform them into amazingly delicious bites!

 A little spare change can go a long way… and Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) of Southwest Florida is counting on it!

“Pennies from the Heart” is a month long fundraising campaign that will run from April 1- 30, 2010.  Lee and Collier County Schools, McDonald’s® restaurants, Fifth Third bank branches and businesses throughout Southwest Florida will participate in a friendly competition to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House® and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, two major programs of RMHC.

Ronald McDonald House is a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill or injured children who are being treated at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.  Since 1996, the Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Florida has provided shelter and support to over 2,400 families.

Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® is a state-of-the-art mobile pediatric healthcare unit providing medical and dental care, eye exams, glasses, physicals and health education to underserved children in their own neighborhood. The Care Mobile program serves more than 3,000 children annually.

 On Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. Jennifer’s, Southwest Florida’s finest women’s apparel boutique, will be featuring their unique and classic fashions at a Fashion Show and Luncheon to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida. Annual Storybook Ball Date Set

for Ronald McDonald House Charities® of SWFL

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida will bring the animated tale, “Toy Story,” to life at its annual Storybook Ball. The black-tie event will be held April 17, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point from 6:00 p.m. -10:30 p.m. Dinner, dancing and a silent auction will be among the evening’s festivities.
