Since 1970, January has been recognized as National Blood Donor Month (NVBDM).  The Community Blood Center has joined with AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) to stress the importance of donating blood and get donors mobilized to help boost local supplies.  The need for blood is constant, and volunteer blood donors contribute to nearly all the blood used for patient care in the United States.  Every person depends on blood.  Each day, patients across the country receive approximately 39,000 units of this lifesaving resource. Every 25 minutes someone in a Collier County hospital receives blood.  This year alone, as many as five million patients will require blood transfusions, as accident victims, people undergoing surgery, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer and other diseases. Immediately following the terrorist attacks, Collier County, like most other regions of the nation, experienced an outpouring of charitable spirit by the many blood donors who came to give a their gifts of life. The Community Blood Center hopes to see that same spirit of giving continue. Donating blood this September 11 is one way people can help to save lives as well as memorialize the lives of people impacted by the terrorist attacks in 2001.   Every 2 seconds someone in America needs blood so the Community Blood Center encourages everyone to pay it forward, give blood and save 3 lives with a single pint. People can donate blood every 56 days. Anyone who weighs at least 110 pounds can give blood. Donors must be age 17 (16 year old donors can give blood with parent present). There is no upper age maximum to give blood. All donors must supply photo ID at time of donation.  Donating blood is easy and safe. Donors must eat prior to giving blood and should be well hydrated.
